What lit your flame: Susy’s story

What lit your flame?Susy Brouard (CAFOD Theology Team): “As I studied languages at university, I spent my third year overseas and chose to go to Chile. I spent most of the year working alongside the sisters of Mother Teresa who had a home for children with disabilities who had been abandoned or orphaned. We washed all the nappies by hand as the Sisters believed that their lifestyle should reflect that of those around them who did not possess things like washing-machines – there was always a huge pile waiting for me when I got in each morning and if we wanted hot water it had to be heated up in a big pot over a fire!

Sometimes I went to visit families with the Sisters – so many people living in little more than a shack, with mud floors and very few material possessions. My experience in Chile made a deep impression on me and when I came back to England I began to see the poverty that exists in this country too. Authors such a Jean Vanier, Sheila Cassidy, Edwina Gately and the words of Mother Teresa all inspired me to work towards a world free of injustice, poverty and prejudice.”

As we mark our 50th anniversary at CAFOD, it is time to reflect. We are asking all staff, volunteers, supporters and other friends of CAFOD to look back over their lives and recall the moment when they were first drawn into the fight against poverty and injustice. http://www.cafod.org.uk/whatlityourflame
