It was the amazing work of Ruth and others that opened my eyes and inspired me to follow a career in development and public health
Harriet Jones (CAFOD HIV Team): “Like many of my generation, images of the Ethiopian famine were some of the earliest and most poignant memories I have of the poverty and hunger. It was around this time that I also realised there was something we could all do to help. A good friend of my family’s, Ruth Wooldridge, was one of the founders of Nairobi Hospice in Kenya. From the age of about 10 I had attended fundraising events to raise money for the charity.
At secondary school I had the opportunity to do more and put forward Nairobi Hospice as the school charity for the year. Ruth came in to do an assembly and Nairobi Hospice was voted as the charity we would support. It was the amazing work of Ruth and others that opened my eyes and inspired me to follow a career in development and public health – a career that I am fortunate enough to be working in at CAFOD today.”
As we mark our 50th anniversary at CAFOD, it is time to reflect. We are asking all staff, volunteers, supporters and other friends of CAFOD to look back over their lives and recall the moment when they were first drawn into the fight against poverty and injustice. http://www.cafod.org.uk/whatlityourflame
