AliceA

Alice Atieno Ahenda lived in Korogocho – the fourth largest slum in Nairobi.

She completed her high school education but could not access further education. So she joined a group of young people at St. John Catholic Church in Korogocho where she participated in sporting activities.

Through this, she was able to articulate the issues affecting youth in Korogocho, especially the girls who are more vulnerable than the boys.

Alice was also the elected secretary-general of our partner St. John Sports Society, a daunting task for a lady in a male dominated society. Her main challenge was convincing young people, especially young girls, that they can transform their lives and serve their community.

Tragically, Alice was killed in a car accident on November 18, 2009 near Eldoret in Kenya. She is remembered with great affection by all those who met her and is very sadly missed – but her work lives on.

I didn’t know Alice but through the Wrexham CAFOD office I learnt about the good work happening in Kenya. May she return to the arms of the One who made her and inspired her and may her example inspire others to use their talents for the good of others.

Alice, my prayers go out for you and your family at this sad time.

Although I did not know you, the story of how you helped to inspire young girls in Kenya is uplifting. I pray that the lives of all those young girls you knew will be a living testament of your faith and love. God bless you.

I remember an afternoon spent with Alice close to the end of her visit to UK. Her joyful approach to life struck me as did her delight at the simple oppotunities the trip had given her. It was with shock and sadness that I heard today of her death. I will hold her inspirational life in my memory and pray for all those who love her and will miss her both here and in Kenya. My condolences and prayers. Pat
