LucyM in Pakistan

Lucy travelled to Pakistan to see how local partners are helping survivors to recover after the earthquake.

“A few days before my trip I saw a news report revealing that Muslim clerics in Mansehra in Pakistan had issued a deadline for women working for international relief agencies in earthquake affected areas of Pakistan to be expelled.

“The ultimatum was issued following a large and rather raucous party held by an international aid agency based in Mansehra, at which staff had been observed drinking, listening to loud music and behaving ‘inappropriately’.

“As the plane banks over Afghanistan, I think about how as an aid worker, you are never truly ‘off duty’. I wonder whether the warning is just bravado, or is a genuine security threat.

“Stepping off the plane, I am hit by a hot, wet, breeze carrying the scent of stagnant water, and am reminded that it is monsoon season.”
