Step into the Gap: Tackling hunger one bowl at a time

Fundraise for CAFOD's Family Fast Day

Caroline Collins is a Step into the Gap volunteer at Newman University in Birmingham. This week she is getting ready for Family Fast Day.

At Newman University we have been preparing to swap our usual Friday lunch boxes for a simple soup lunch.

For so many of our brothers and sisters around the world, the harvest determines whether their families will go to bed hungry tonight.

For Lilian in Zambia, a good harvest is so important.  It means she can feed herself and her family in the coming months, and sell any extra food to buy school clothes, books and materials to build a home.

Lilian was very sick when she discovered she had HIV. But the money raised by CAFOD supporters has helped Lilian with medicine and has also has provided training for her to stay healthy, and grow healthy food.

By taking part in CAFOD’s Family Fast Day we can stand in solidarity with people like Lilian.  We can all be part of helping to eradicate global poverty.

At Newman University we have been preparing to swap our usual Friday lunch boxes for a simple soup lunch.

So this Friday, with my apron on, I’ll be cooking up a soup storm and inviting staff and students at Newman University to help tackle hunger one bowl at a time. We’ll be eating simply together, and donating the money we would normally have spent to CAFOD.
