The London Marathon 2025 is just over 2 weeks away and TeamCAFOD runners are gearing up for what promises to be a truly unforgettable day. Among them are Joe and Kate, two dedicated team members who are not only preparing for the physical and mental challenges of the race but are also fundraising for CAFOD’s vital work.

Kate’s marathon challenge

Kate was initially anxious about fundraising for CAFOD. But as soon as she started, she was overwhelmed by the generosity and support from both long-time CAFOD supporters and those who had never heard of CAFOD.

“I was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to run the London Marathon for CAFOD. I was initially a little anxious about the fundraising, but the support and generosity I encountered amazed me!” Kate shared. “The people who supported my fundraising were a mix of those who already support CAFOD and many people who were not aware of the work that CAFOD do. My hope is that these people will continue to support CAFOD in the future.”

In addition to fundraising, Kate’s training for the marathon was a rewarding challenge.

“While working on the fundraising I also had to train for the marathon, which has been a humbling experience, but also one I have really enjoyed. My love for running has definitely grown over the last few months and I am already looking into my next challenge!” she said.

For Kate, the London Marathon is not just about completing 26.2 miles, but about being part of an incredible event in the heart of one of the world’s most iconic cities.

“The London Marathon is the best marathon in the world, and I am so excited to run through the streets of this amazing city! I am looking forward to being amongst so many other runners as well as the incredible crowds who will help me get to the finish line!”

Joe’s marathon story

For Joe, running the London Marathon represents much more than just a personal challenge. After retiring, Joe decided to take on something that would push him out of his comfort zone and bring him closer to others.

“The training has been a great way to challenge myself and get me out of my comfort zone,” Joe explained. “There’s no question that I’m much fitter and healthier now.”

Joe has also seen tremendous progress in his running, hitting new personal bests across multiple distances.

“All the training really works. I’ve seen my running times improve consistently over the past few months and I’ve hit so many new PBs at 5k, 10k and half marathon distances.”

With support from CAFOD, Joe also received valuable guidance to fine-tune his running technique. “I got some very useful running tips from a running coach that CAFOD brought in to support our training,” Joe said.

The fundraising has been equally inspiring for Joe. “I’ve been so pleased at the success of my fundraising for CAFOD. It’s been really uplifting to see so much generosity in a world that has so many problems,” he said.

His supporters have been enthusiastic, with many expressing how important CAFOD’s work is. “There is a lot of public goodwill out there for CAFOD,” Joe shared. “My supporters keep telling me how important CAFOD’s work is.”

The big day

For both Kate and Joe, race day will be a momentous occasion. As first-time marathon runners, they are both excited and eager to take part in such a prestigious event. Joe is particularly looking forward to crossing the iconic finish line on the Mall.

“It will be such a great moment to cross the finishing line on The Mall – something I’ve dreamt about endlessly! Finishing will be a big milestone in my life!” he shared.

Kate, too, is filled with anticipation. “I can’t wait to get out there on the big day, because spectators at the London Marathon are renowned for creating so much energy and buzz which will help first-timers like me to battle all the way to 42.2km!” she said. The crowds, the atmosphere and the collective energy will undoubtedly make this a memorable day for them both.

After the race, Joe is especially looking forward to sharing his success with his loved ones and fellow CAFOD supporters at the post-race reception. “I’m really looking forward to the post-race reception in a beautiful church in Mayfair where I can share my joy at finishing with my family, supporters and other members of the CAFOD team.”

Good luck Kate and Joe!

We wish Kate, Joe and all of our TeamCAFOD runners the best of luck in the London Marathon. Your dedication and determination are truly inspiring!
