Join us for the 2024 Big Lent Walk

What do a priest, two dogs, two mums and four children have in common? They are all taking part in the 2024 Big Lent Walk starting on Wednesday 14 February.

In a few weeks, the Big Lent Walk is happening again. Every year since 2021 hundreds of thousands of people from all corners of England and Wales have taken up the challenge to walk 200km in 40 days. In doing so they have raised nearly £2 million to support communities around the world as they work to overcome poverty. We are ever so amazed by our supporters efforts. This year we would love you to meet some of the people who have already signed up, and invite you to do the same!

Fr. Robert Thompson

Fr. Robert Thompson is the vicar of St Mary’s and St James’, Church of England Parish, in Kilburn and West Hampstead. He has signed up for the Big Lent Walk and says:

“We have been blessed here to work really closely with friends and neighbours at the Catholic and Oblate Parish of the Sacred Heart. With them we have discovered what wonderful work CAFOD do throughout the world in tackling global poverty and addressing the climate crisis. We have been learning together what it means to hear and respond to the cries of the earth and the poor, as Pope Francis calls us to.”

Fr. Robert continues:

“In this parish we are taking part in the Big Lent Walk to support CAFOD’s standing in solidarity with our poorest siblings in the world, to give them the tools to create a better life. As Saint Oscar Romero reminds us: ‘Many would like the poor to keep on saying it is God’s will for them to live that way. But it is not God’s will for some to have everything and others to have nothing. That cannot be of God.’ I will be walking my 5km a day with Cora who hopefully will become a very super fit plummer terrier in these 40 days.”

Therese Wynn-Davies

Therese Wynn-Davies from CAFOD’s Digital Fundraising Team is also taking on the Big Lent Walk. Her fundraising page, ‘2 prams, 4 kids, 2 mums: walking 200km’, shows the kind of challenge she is taking on.

Therese says:

“We have four children aged three and under between us! So there’s going to be some weight to push around as well as getting our steps in. We both live in Crawley so we plan to meet half way and go and visit some coffee shops on the days when I’m not working and also roping our husbands in at the weekends.

“We aim to do 100k each during Lent, hopefully we might lose some baby-weight and get some fresh air on our babies too!”

Sponsor Therese, Ciara, their children and husbands as they walk to help communities around the world as they fight to overcome poverty:

Ged and Louie

We can’t get enough of Ged and Louie, who are now planning to do their Big Lent Walkies in CAFOD vests!
