Running the ‘world’s most scenic marathon’ to support the fight against global poverty
Earlier this year Damian Porter took on the Richmond Marathon in London, which has been described as the world’s most scenic marathon.
Starting at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew and passing through iconic landmarks such as Hampton Court Palace, Ham House, Richmond Green, Teddington Lock, Kingston Riverside and the winding River Thames, it’s easy to understand why this marathon has earned its scenic reputation.
Damian has openly admitted that running a marathon was never on his bucket list – in fact, quite the opposite:
“Cards on the table: I am not a natural runner, have never run a marathon before, and will never run one again! I am not exactly of an age normally associated with embarking on a long-distance running career either. This is a ridiculous distance, and it makes no sense from any perspective. It is arguably not even healthy.”
For Damian, the marathon wasn’t about the race itself. The true significance lay in the cause behind it.
“What does make sense is putting the human body through this to raise funds so other people may have access to some education, healthcare, and even basic nutrition and shelter,” Damian explained. “I hope that makes some sense to you too.”
For Damian, the sole reason for running this marathon was to support CAFOD’s fight against global poverty. He believes in CAFOD’s mission and wanted to contribute to achieving that vision, even if it meant stepping out of his comfort zone to do some running!
If you would be interested in running for CAFOD, please send us an email at events@cafod.org.uk.
Damian has raised well over £2,000 so far. Thank you, Damian, for stepping outside your comfort zone to help CAFOD’s ongoing efforts to bring equality to those in need around the world.
