Tom’s inspiring journey: Running the Great North Run for CAFOD

The Great North Run, the world’s largest half-marathon, draws tens of thousands of runners each year to tackle the 13.1-mile route between Newcastle and South Shields. Since its inception in 1981, the race has seen 42 events, and this year, CAFOD’s own Tom Delamere is joining the ranks to raise vital funds for our communities around the world.

Tom, our Government Relations Adviser at CAFOD, has been part of the CAFOD family for nearly 10 years, contributing across various teams. His journey even took him to South Sudan, where he worked directly with partners on impactful programmes. Known for his friendly presence around the office, Tom has witnessed firsthand the transformative impact of CAFOD’s work. “All of our fundraising efforts are so important because they bring about real change for our sisters and brothers around the world,” he shares.

I know many readers might see a 13-mile course as a daunting task, but Tom is more than ready for the challenge. “I’m super excited for it,” he says. “I’ve done a few half-marathons before. Of course, it’s tiring, but it’s great to do something good for your health while also supporting communities around the world.” Tom is especially looking forward to returning to Newcastle, where he went to university. To prepare for the race in September, he’s training by running, playing football, and cycling to work.

Tom’s motivation for the race is deeply rooted in his commitment to raising funds for CAFOD. The run not only aligns with his support for CAFOD’s vision, but also serves as a personal motivator—getting him out the door, lacing up his running shoes, and clearing his head.

When asked why he chose CAFOD, Tom said “I really enjoy the model of engaging with local partners throughout the world. I think the way we operate is very special – we work to empower our partners to raise their voice and bring about lasting change.”

Tom’s cousin and Godson will be joining him in the Great North Run, both raising money for CAFOD. “It’s great to know we’ll be running together,” Tom shared, “and even better that it’s for such a worthy cause.”

The Great North Run is set for September 8th this year, so there’s still plenty of time to rally behind Tom and support CAFOD. Tom leaves readers with this message: “Raising money for CAFOD is a powerful way to support communities around the world in a sustainable way, helping to build a brighter future. Plus, it’s a great motivator to keep me training! Thank you to everyone who has sponsored me so far—I’m really looking forward to the race.”
